Slate Roofing (Repair & Replacement)
Slate is one of the longest-lasting roofing materials out there, but when it leaks, it needs the right fix. Iron Badger Roofing helps homeowners and property owners across Southern Maine and the NH Seacoast with slate roof repairs, leak troubleshooting, and full slate replacements.
If you’re dealing with a leak, missing slate, or storm damage, we’ll tell you what’s going on and what it takes to fix it. Straight, no runaround.
Slate roof repair (most common calls)
Slate problems usually come from a few predictable places. We help with:
- Broken, cracked, or slipped slates
- Missing slates after wind or snow slides
- Leaks around chimneys, valleys, skylights, and walls
- Flashing failures (often the real cause of “mystery leaks”)
- Ice and snow-related damage and leak points
- Storm damage documentation for insurance claims (when applicable)
If you have photos, sending a few clear shots up front can speed up diagnosis and scheduling.
Minimum slate repair scope
Slate repairs require safe setup and careful work. Most slate repair visits start as a minimum service call scope so we can show up, set up safely, diagnose the real leak source, and complete a proper repair. If you send photos, we’ll tell you quickly whether it’s a small localized fix or something that needs a larger scope.
What slate repair typically costs
Slate repair pricing depends heavily on roof height, pitch, access, and whether the leak is slate-only or a flashing/chimney issue.
As a practical starting point, most slate repairs start around $2,500–$3,000, then scale based on complexity and the amount of slate/flashing work needed.
Common factors that change the price:
- Steep roofs, multiple stories, or difficult access
- Sourcing and matching slate size/thickness/color (when spares aren’t available)
- Chimney, valley, wall, or skylight flashing repairs
- Winter conditions and safe staging requirements
- Travel time for out-of-area projects
If you want a fast answer, send your town/address and a few photos. We can usually tell you quickly what category of repair you’re in.
Natural slate and synthetic slate
We work on both:
- Natural slate (traditional stone slate roofs)
- Synthetic slate (composite/synthetic slate products)
If you’re not sure what you have, send a photo. We can usually identify it quickly.
Vermont Slate Company materials (when replacement slate is needed)
When a slate repair needs replacement pieces and matching spares aren’t available, we often source slate through Vermont Slate Company. They offer a wide range of slate roofing options, and we use them when we need consistent sizing and dependable supply for New England projects.
If you already have matching spare slates on site, we’ll use those when they’re a good match and in good condition.
ReadySlate® (pre-assembled natural slate system)
For certain projects, we can also install ReadySlate®, which Vermont Slate Company describes as the first pre-assembled natural slate roofing system. The goal is to keep the benefits of natural slate while using a system approach that can help with consistency and installation efficiency.
If you’re considering slate replacement (or a larger slate section rebuild), we can tell you whether traditional slate or a system like ReadySlate® makes more sense for your roof and budget.
Slate roof replacement (when repair isn’t the smart move)
Sometimes slate is too far gone, patch repairs keep stacking up, or the roof has been “repaired” the wrong way over the years. If replacement is the better long-term move, we’ll walk you through options and help you choose the right system for your home and budget. See also our roof replacement and roof repair pages.

FAQs
Can you repair a slate roof without replacing the whole thing?
Often, yes. Many slate leaks are localized (slate damage or flashing failure). The key is diagnosing the real source.
Do you replace individual slates?
Yes. When the roof is otherwise in good shape, replacing damaged/missing slates is usually the right fix.
Is the leak always caused by broken slate?
Not always. A lot of slate “leaks” are actually flashing, chimney, or valley issues. That’s why inspection matters.
What is ReadySlate®?
ReadySlate® is a pre-assembled natural slate roofing system offered by Vermont Slate Company. It’s designed to deliver the look and performance of natural slate using a systemized installation approach.
Do you work on synthetic slate too?
Yes. We repair and replace both natural slate and synthetic slate. If you send a photo, we can usually identify what you have quickly.
Do you work in winter?
We can handle many emergency and leak situations year-round, depending on conditions and safe access. For an active leak, see our 24/7 emergency roof repair page.
